Eco Leather: Is It Doing More Harm Than Good?

“Don’t call it leather if it’s plastic”. The Argentinian Tanners launched a campaign against the improper use of the term. “Eco or green, it’s just a fake material that pollutes much more”. The brand GuidoMaggi has always adopted good production practices choosing the finest materials within an eco-sustainable supply chain

It can be defined as eco or green, with appellations that enhance its sustainable value, which focuses on the need to protect the environment by making informed choices, but it is only a fake.

The leather passed off as green, eco or vegan is simply plastic and it’s much more harmful and polluting. For years, the tanning industry has been the victim of disparaging campaigns by animal rights activists and associations and wants to proudly reaffirm its good practices, which have always been inspired by the principles of eco-sustainability, circular economy, and environmental protection. An industry which is too often the subject of fake news and that tries to defend itself with the truth of the facts. And one of the first truths is that the material presented as the new ecological leather is actually simply plastic. It is necessary to clarify and communicate the spirit and the sustainable soul of leather and its processing, rediscovering and re-evaluating the value and prestige of a noble, exclusive, but too often discredited material. The latest complaint comes from the Argentinian Tanners: “No diga cuero si es plástico” their cry to support “a campaign to combat the misuse” of the term “leather”.

The “Cámara Industrial de las Manufacturas del Cuero y Afines” (CIMA) is working on a bill that prohibits the use of the term for materials and products made of imitation leather. The leaders of CIMA have decided, in essence, to support a bill to prevent products defined in “ecological leather” from containing the term “leather”.

“Don’t call it leather if it’s plastic”. A claim that was necessary to defend and support an industry too often discredited.

“We don’t want people to continue talking about eco-leather. Because it’s a lie: it’s a plastic sheet, “explained CIMA general secretary Martin Occhione. The so-called alternative materials, implement an unfair competition policy, using the same make-believe term that they are ecological products that preserve all the qualities of the leather, but with the added value of not polluting. In reality, this is not the case: they are dangerous for the planet. They are artificial, simply made of plastic and pollute much more.

Serious companies, such as GuidoMaggi, a leading brand in luxury shoes, have always made of sustainability a flag. It is in their DNA to respect the environment and foster an ever more circular economy, which limits any waste and is respectful of animals. Leather had and still has a precious value that must be recognized and cultivated with good practices and without deception.
